Technopreneurship for Students

Technopreneurship for students is expressed as a desired outcome in T.I.P.’s outcomes-based education (OBE) model. Integral to OBE is the development of engineering and technology graduates with industry-desired qualities, such as technopreneurial skills. Armed with technopreneurship skills, T.I.P. students are molded based on the envisioned Engineers of 2020 – engineers and technology workers with strong analytical skills, practical ingenuity, creativity, excellent communication skills, business and management skills, leadership, high ethical standards, professionalism, dynamism, agility, resilience, flexibility, and a desire for lifelong learning.

This multitude of skills is encapsulated by the four (4) core skills of technopreneurship which are:

Technopreneurship Core Skills

Problem Identification
Distinguishing and formulating problems with business opportunity implications
Ideation
Creating realistic and opportunity-maximizing solutions to identified problems
Market validation
Testing an ideated solution against actual market needs
Execution
Implementing a problem solution

These technopreneurial core skills are essential for disruptive innovation that can help companies solve problems, create new markets, overtake existing markets, and provide more affordable and useful products and services in a highly globalized and competitive world. When effectively learned through experience, these skills therefore make T.I.P. engineering and technology graduates more valuable to any industry.

Collaborative Applied Research for Faculty Members

Hand in hand with T.I.P. student Technopreneurship is the integration of collaborative applied research into T.I.P.’s institutional strategic focus primarily to develop faculty members who can effectively teach Technopreneurship and the engineering and technology courses they specialize in. Collaborative applied research provides a concrete environment in which T.I.P. faculty members can also learn the core technopreneurship skills through experience, and at the same time, work on real-life industry problems, come up with realistic solutions through research, and apply their expertise to create and execute solutions for client companies.

Through collaborative applied research projects, faculty members acquire technopreneurial skills themselves and gain more credibility and efficacy in teaching technopreneurship to T.I.P. students.

Although T.I.P. collaborative applied research is primarily for faculty members, select students are involved in projects as well. Select students are given the opportunity to contextualize and understand theoretical learnings beyond the confines of classrooms and traditional laboratories, transforming them into highly competent engineering and technology graduates truly ready for industry employment as intrapreneurs for disruptive innovation or as self-driven innovators who can better contribute to nation building.

T.I.P.’s commitment to its brand of technopreneurship and collaborative applied research includes the whole institution’s participation and support which builds on the traditional prevailing model wherein individuals from industry reach out only to individuals in the academe for help.

With the institution’s support, T.I.P. TechnoCoRe more effectively bridges the gap between industry and academe to create long-term, sustainable value creation for all stakeholders involved.

To service its growing list of partnerships and collaborative applied research projects with industry, T.I.P. has formed a dedicated TechnoCoRe group composed of industry liaison officers, principal researchers, project managers, and a growing number of applied research-oriented faculty members to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services.

From the old model where individuals from industry interface only with individuals in the academe, the new T.I.P. TechnoCoRe model allows individuals and whole departments and whole companies to tap into the integrated expertise and resources of the whole T.I.P. Community, backed by the full support of T.I.P. as an institution. This institutional thrust along technopreneurship and collaborative applied research is what sets T.I.P. TechnoCoRe apart from the others.

In further support of T.I.P. TechnoCoRe, T.I.P. is currently constructing an innovation and research building to house extensive fabrication facilities, co-located engineering testing laboratories, collaborative work spaces, incubator spaces, and other facilities to be utilized by T.I.P. students, faculty members, and industry partners alike in collaborative innovation-generating endeavors.

Student Capstone Design Projects

T.I.P. engineering and computing academic programs culminate in a major design experience known as a capstone design project. In capstone design projects, student teams work on small-scale design concerns and problems from companies that are workable within a semester’s (6 months) time frame.

For Engineering and Architecture Students

Applying theoretical engineering knowledge and skills they have acquired in earlier course work, engineering and architecture students’ design projects for industry clients are made in accordance with various codes and standards, and in consideration of multiple real constraints and trade-offs. Technical advice and guidance is provided by competent engineering faculty members to meet the time constraints of the students’ projects.

For Computing Students

Computing students engage industry by performing programming projects or small-scale systems development that are doable within the student’s semestral time frame. They are also provided with advice and guidance by experienced computing faculty members to ensure that their developed programs are functional and can easily be improved or modified should companies wish to expand them later on.

Supported by T.I.P. at an institutional level, T.I.P.’s applied research thrust under T.I.P. TechnoCoRe focuses on the following niches:

In these research niches, industry is provided access to T.I.P.’s competent principal researchers. These principal researchers are aided by an ever growing stable of research-oriented, creative, and capable faculty members from all of T.I.P.’s engineering and other programs. Modern school-based engineering tools – state-of-the-art laboratories, modeling and simulation software, and fabrication facilities – are also provided by T.I.P. to researchers to enable them to take on and accomplish complex projects. Select students are also engaged as members of research teams.

T.I.P. TechnoCoRe Services to Industry

IT Services

The T.I.P. Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) offers advanced computing and technology systems development services including complex mobile application and website development for clients.

The T.I.P. ITSO created, maintains, and further expands T.I.P.’s Integrated Systems (T.I.P. IS) which includes modules that facilitate:

  • Online and mobile student registration, grade-checking, and payments, handling an average of 23,000 students every semester
  • Financial Information System that is fully integrated with MS Great Plains
  • Requisition and Budget Management Information System
  • Human Resource Information System
  • Library System

The T.I.P. ITSO has a growing stable of project managers, programmers, and system architects. More importantly, it has direct access to T.I.P.’s brightest computing and technology students.

Proceeds from T.I.P. ITSO projects go directly to a T.I.P. Fund that supports students and faculty members’ innovation projects that have social impact potential.

T.I.P. does charge for its applied research services.

It must be understood and appreciated that quality research comes at a cost which the school must pass on. Income from such activities fuels a fund that provides seed capital for students and faculty members’ innovations that may have significant business and social impact.

In the long term, T.I.P. aspires to contribute to the development of the nation’s innovation generation capacity with greater significance.
